Back to the Future

My favorite decade in fashion is the 60’s which was characterized by diversity in trends and groundbreaking fashion tradition. Many icons were setting trends, the Beatles for their hairstyles, Jackie Kennedy with the pillbox hat, Mary Quant introduced the mini-skirt. Fashion newcomer, Twiggy, popularized short hairstyles during that period. Unlikely patterns were mixed together, go-go boots were in almost every girl’s closet, and the hippies were taking over America. Eric Cartman of South Park would have much to say about hippies, but I admire some of their countercultural values and of course, their fashion sense.

The influence of Audrey Hepburn on 60’s fashion is attributed to Hubert de Givenchy who designed much of her wardrobe. 60’s style and color can be seen in Fall 2011 RTW collections like Roksanda Ilincic, Jil Sander, Yves Saint Laurent, and Miu Miu to name a few. Not everyone can afford to spend a month’s rent on designer clothing. Not everyone today may want to enter the fashion time capsule to the 60s. The idea is to own your look. Simply pick an era and put retro panache to the look with bold prints. Modern day designers are going back to the future. Miu Miu has resurrected many eras in recent collections. Its 40’s style is apparent in tea dresses and frame bags of its recent collections. Let your style say a little something about you. Make it appear effortless for a natural appeal but distinct enough for you to stand out in a crowd.
